Just to point out there's even higher-end manipulation available if required in ZXTM. From TrafficScript, you can pass application-layer data to and from a Java servlet to achieve effects at least as complex as (for example) embedding a water mark in an image file on-the-fly - possibly containing some user-specific data: http://knowledgehub.zeus.com/articles/2008/05/22/watermarking_images_with_java_extensions

We spent quite some time evaluating F5, Nortel, Foundry and ZXTM (A10 wasn't available in EMEA at the time, it just changed with an office opening in the Netherlands). What sold us to ZXTM:
-ease of use (compared to F5 and iRules)
-price/performance, dedicated ASICs are of no use when using rules so using off the shelf servers is way cheaper
-busiest content providers in my country use them
and we now use rules to
-switch from http to https
-insert backend node in title for lan IPs (great for troubleshooting)
-retry request returning errors due to failed nodes on working ones (before health checks disable them)
-hide 404s or redirect them to the previous site (preserving old links)
Needless to say, we couldn't live without rules :)

I would suggest that this difference is what makes a simple load balancer a fully fledged ADC.

To my mind it is wrong to lump the two sides of the family together.

Having a scripting language capable of changing/manipulating the payload of the traffic, should be the entry point for calling yourself an ADC.
